Andrew Cuomo Joins NYC Mayoral Race, Declaring City ‘In Crisis’

The former governor of New York has kicked off his campaign for mayor of New York City, presenting himself as the individual capable of addressing crime, homelessness, and economic challenges.

Andrew Cuomo, the ex-governor of New York, declared his intention to run for mayor of New York City on Saturday, initiating a notable challenge against the current mayor, Eric Adams, in a field that is becoming increasingly competitive.

Cuomo, a Democrat who stepped down in 2021 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, unveiled his campaign through a video statement on the social media platform X, presenting himself as the experienced leader necessary to tackle the city’s pressing issues.

“New York City is the greatest city in the world,” Cuomo stated, attributing the city’s current struggles to “failed Democratic leadership” and a “lack of intelligent action,” claiming it is in a state of crisis that “feels threatening, out of control.”

Cuomo depicted a grim view of a city grappling with crime, homelessness, and economic decline, pointing out the challenges posed by an influx of illegal immigrants, vacant storefronts, graffiti, and concerns over public safety.

“We can manage a crisis because we have,” Cuomo asserted. “We recently did it together during COVID, and we understand that the first step to solving a problem is having the strength and courage to acknowledge it. Today, we know our New York City is facing serious troubles.”

Emphasizing his role as a pragmatic moderate, Cuomo highlighted his willingness to collaborate with those across the political spectrum.

“I will collaborate with anyone committed to improving New York,” he stated. “I have a history of working alongside President Trump in various situations, and I hope he remembers his roots and joins us in enhancing our city.”

Additionally, he vowed to adopt a stringent approach towards Washington and Albany to secure adequate funding for the city and uphold the cherished values of New Yorkers.

As he enters the race, Cuomo carries the weight of the sexual harassment allegations that led to his resignation, after spending years and significant resources defending against those claims. While he refrained from explicitly discussing the controversy in his announcement, he acknowledged his past missteps.

“Did I make every decision correctly during my time in public service? Absolutely not,” he reflected. “Would I approach certain situations differently if given the chance now? Certainly. Did I make mistakes, some of which were difficult to accept? Definitely, and I believe I’ve learned from them, becoming a better person in the process, and I aim to demonstrate that every day.”

Despite the surrounding controversies, Cuomo is expected to run a strong campaign, leveraging his substantial fundraising skills, an extensive record of achievements as governor, and potential support from moderate voters who previously backed Adams.

In the meantime, Adams remains in the race, despite facing federal accusations of fraud, bribery, and other serious charges. The Trump administration is attempting to dismiss the case against Adams, claiming that the prosecution was politically driven and has hindered Adams’s ability to align with Trump’s agenda of addressing illegal immigration.

This situation has prompted numerous resignations, including that of Manhattan’s lead prosecutor and six senior federal prosecutors in New York, who stepped down in protest, asserting that there was no legal justification for the White House’s request to terminate the case.

The judge overseeing Adams’s trial has postponed his upcoming April hearing and is contemplating whether to advance or dismiss the allegations against him.

Adams is accused of accepting over $100,000 in campaign contributions and luxury benefits from foreign nationals, and he faces allegations of falsifying financial records and advising associates on ways to conceal illegal activities. He has denied any wrongdoing.
