Arrest Made in Shooting of US Healthcare Executive; Police Identify Suspect as ‘Person of Interest’ in Brian Thompson Case | US News
An individual has been apprehended in connection with the shooting of a prominent US healthcare executive and was discovered with a manifesto that criticized healthcare corporations, as reported.
The writings condemned companies for prioritizing profits over patient care, according to the New York Times, referencing a senior law enforcement official.
Luigi Mangione, 26, is currently in custody for the deadly shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Patrons at a McDonald’s in central Pennsylvania perceived the man as “suspicious” and alerted the authorities, as reported by NBC, citing three senior law enforcement officials.
Upon arrival, officers found that the individual possessed a fake ID, leading to his detention for questioning at a police station, according to two senior law enforcement officials speaking to NBC.
What We Know About Brian Thompson’s Shooting
At the police station, they discovered he possessed a firearm matching the one used in Brian Thompson’s murder, a silencer, and a counterfeit New Jersey ID, according to the two sources.
The suspect is currently being interrogated in Altoona, approximately 100 miles east of Pittsburgh, according to NBC sources.
Investigators are also inquiring if he recently traveled by bus from Philadelphia, as indicated by a senior law enforcement official.
Mr. Thompson was fatally shot by a masked assailant outside a Manhattan hotel on Wednesday morning while heading to the company’s annual conference.
Footage captured the assailant slowly approaching Mr. Thompson and opening fire outside the Hilton hotel, which New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch described as a “premeditated, preplanned targeted attack”.
Shell casings recovered from the scene of Mr. Thompson’s death were inscribed with the words “deny,” “delay,” and “depose”.
According to New York City police, the gunman fled on foot before transitioning to a bicycle into Central Park, prompting a citywide manhunt.
In the park, detectives found a grey backpack that they believe the gunman used, containing Monopoly game banknotes and a jacket that might have been worn by the assailant, as reported by NBC this past Sunday.
The man then took a taxi to an Upper Manhattan bus station which provided routes to New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington DC, as stated by New York’s chief of detectives, Joseph Kenny, on Sunday.
New CCTV footage showing a suspect leaving a nearby subway station has emerged, reportedly recorded at 6:15 am—roughly thirty minutes before the shooting on Wednesday.
The video, recorded at the Davidoff of Geneva cigar shop on Sixth Avenue, shows the man ascending some stairs to street level.
