Attorney General of Georgia Declares Candidacy for Governor in 2026
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr, a Republican, declared his candidacy for governor in 2026 after Governor Brian Kemp completed two consecutive terms in office. Carr expressed his intention to support the state’s private sector by providing tax incentives and removing “red tape and burdensome regulations” to aid in the growth of small businesses in Georgia.
Carr emphasized his conservative values and commitment to creating jobs, ensuring safety for families, defending the constitution, and preserving freedoms. He filed the required paperwork with the Georgia Ethics Commission to establish a campaign committee for fundraising purposes for his gubernatorial campaign.
Having been appointed as the state’s attorney general in 2016 by then-Governor Nathan Deal, Carr has a proven track record. He was subsequently elected to full terms in 2018 and 2022. Carr’s initiatives include combating the opioid crisis, supporting law enforcement, and upholding election integrity. He also established specialized units to address gang prosecution and human trafficking within the state.
Prior to his role as attorney general, Carr served in various capacities, including commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development and chief of staff for Senator Johnny Isakson. In the upcoming gubernatorial race, Carr will face competition from other Republican candidates like Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.
With Jones and Raffensperger also vying for the governorship, the race is expected to be competitive. Jones, a loyal ally of former President Donald Trump, may seek his endorsement, while Trump has previously endorsed primary challengers of both Carr and Raffensperger, who ultimately won their respective races in 2022.
Due to the state’s term limit policy, Governor Kemp, also a Republican, is ineligible to seek a third term in 2026. As the first candidate to enter the 2026 gubernatorial contest, Carr’s run for governor signals the beginning of what promises to be a lively and closely watched campaign in Georgia.
