A recording has documented the implosion of the Titan submersible, which went missing during its journey to the Titanic wreck site.
A passive acoustic recorder, positioned approximately 900 miles from the collapse area, captured the sound, according to US Coast Guard officials in a statement.
The brief recording features a loud noise reminiscent of a muffled clap, followed by a few seconds of silence.
The Coast Guard stated that the audio clip “captures the suspected acoustic signature of the Titan submersible implosion” on June 18, 2023.

The implosion claimed the lives of all five individuals on board – including Titan operator Stockton Rush, the founder of Oceangate, the company that owned the submersible; two members of a prominent Pakistani family, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman; British adventurer Hamish Harding; and Titanic expert and sub pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet.
The sub disappeared while en route to explore the Titanic wreck in the North Atlantic Ocean, triggering a five-day search that concluded with authorities confirming the vessel’s destruction, with no survivors.
The wreckage was eventually located on the ocean floor, approximately 300 meters from the Titanic, as reported by officials.
Following the tragedy, concerns were raised regarding the Titan’s unconventional design and Rush’s refusal to undergo independent safety inspections.
OceanGate ceased operations in July 2023.

Titan ‘malfunctioned’ days before fatal dive
A Coast Guard panel examining the tragedy heard two weeks of testimony last September, including statements from a former OceanGate scientific director who reported that the Titan malfunctioned during a dive shortly before its implosion.
The Coast Guard is anticipated to disclose more details regarding the implosion in the future.
A spokesperson mentioned that the investigation remains ongoing and a final report will be published once it is complete.
