Biden and First Lady Spread Holiday Joy to Patients and Families at Children’s Hospital
WASHINGTON—On Friday, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden spread some holiday joy at a children’s hospital, where a toddler in a light blue jumper also stole the show with his playful antics.
The Bidens privately met with children and their families for photos at Children’s National Hospital before Jill Biden delighted a group of young patients by reading “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” in the atrium. While she read, President Biden sat next to her in a red chair, engaging in a playful game of catch with the toddler, charmingly making faces and even coaxing the little boy to sit up on his own chair for a moment.
After concluding her reading, Jill Biden remarked, “Reading and entertainment,” prompting laughter from the audience.
The president then took a moment to lift the spirits of the children, acknowledging the challenges they face during their hospital stay. “Keep the hope,” he encouraged. “You’re in our prayers, you’re in our thoughts, and thank you for letting us join you.”
This visit is part of a longstanding tradition, initiated by First Lady Bess Truman, where the wives of presidents bring holiday cheer to hospitalized children unable to celebrate Christmas at home.
President Biden has participated in all four of Jill Biden’s annual visits, a feat that has been recognized. “We’ve never had a president join for four consecutive years, so you have set a high bar,” remarked Michelle Riley-Brown, the president and CEO of the hospital.
