Biden to Give Farewell Address from the Oval Office on January 15
The concluding address will be broadcast five days prior to the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump.
President Joe Biden is scheduled to address the public two more times before passing the leadership to President-elect Donald Trump.
Biden will deliver a farewell speech from the Oval Office on January 15 at 8 p.m. ET, as announced by the White House on Friday, although details about the content of his speech remain undisclosed.
His farewell address will take place two days after another speech on January 13 at the State Department, where he is anticipated to discuss his foreign policy legacy.
Jean-Pierre indicated that Biden is expected to address critical global issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and escalating tensions in the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region.
“Rest assured, he will discuss major unfolding global events and other significant matters he plans to focus on,” she stated.
Outgoing presidents have historically utilized their farewell speeches to reflect upon their accomplishments, summarize their administration’s achievements, and express hopes for the nation’s future.
This tradition can be traced back to President George Washington, whose written farewell address in 1796 admonished the nation about the perils of political factions, emphasizing that power struggles between parties could engender a “spirit of revenge” as control shifts between them.
Live primetime farewell addresses from the Oval Office have become standard for many recent presidents since President Harry Truman established this tradition in 1953. President Richard Nixon, the only president to resign, made his announcement live from the Oval Office, which features its iconic blue-draped windows.
Other presidents have opted for different venues for their final addresses: President George H. W. Bush spoke at the West Point military academy following his electoral defeat, while President Barack Obama delivered his farewell address from the McCormick Place convention center in Chicago, his hometown.
Four years ago, Trump issued a 20-minute pre-recorded farewell message, stating that his administration accomplished its objectives.
Trump, who is now poised to begin his second term, will be inaugurated on Monday, January 20, coinciding with this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
