Biden Urges Democrats to Swiftly ‘Get Up’ Following Election Defeat
President Joe Biden emphasized at the DNC’s holiday celebration that he and Vice President Kamala Harris are here to stay.
WASHINGTON—During the Democratic National Committee’s holiday event on Sunday, President Joe Biden encouraged fellow Democrats to swiftly rebound from the recent election defeat and connect with the American populace.
“We all face challenges. My dad used to say, ‘When you get knocked down, you just have to get back up. Get back up,’” Biden remarked. “The true measure of a person or a party is how quickly they rise again.”
He urged party members to persist in organizing and engaging with voters.
“What we stand for is truly worth the struggle. That’s our path forward, to never surrender, to maintain our faith.”
Biden is down to about five weeks in office, as Republicans are set to take control of the House, Senate, and the White House in the upcoming year.
The president admitted he hadn’t initially intended to run for president in 2020 but reconsidered due to the high stakes involved.
The president defended his achievements, asserting that he assumed office amid a crisis stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic and believes he is leaving the country in a stronger position than when he took office four years ago.
First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff also addressed the audience at the DNC holiday party.
Biden commended Harris for her collaboration and expressed, “You’re not going anywhere, kid, because we’re not going to allow that,” eliciting laughter and applause from attendees.
“The unfortunate news for all of you is that I’m not going anywhere. We will remain engaged,” Biden concluded his address.
Vice President Harris highlighted the resilience of the party stating that despite the electoral setback, the party’s spirit remains unbroken.
“Our spirit is not diminished. We are not defeated. Let’s be clear: we are strong,” Harris asserted. “We all believe in the promise of America. We uphold the commitments of freedom, justice, opportunity, and dignity for everyone, not just for a select few.”
As outlined in the memo, the president seeks to broaden clemency, enhance relief for student debt, and utilize remaining funds from his hallmark legislation during his last weeks in office. On Monday, he is also expected to deliver a speech focusing on his pro-worker and pro-union policies.
