Boeing Plans to Reduce Workforce by 396 Employees in Washington

Boeing, the U.S. aircraft manufacturer, plans to lay off 396 employees across multiple locations in Washington, as revealed by a notice from the state’s Employment Security Department on Monday.

This announcement is part of a larger initiative disclosed in October, which is anticipated to impact around 17,000 Boeing jobs—approximately 10 percent of the company’s total global workforce—through layoffs or by leaving positions unfilled.

The company is working to restore production of its most popular model, the 737 MAX, following a lengthy strike by over 33,000 workers on the U.S. West Coast that temporarily paused production of the majority of its commercial aircraft.

When asked for comments, Boeing highlighted previous statements indicating that the company is making adjustments to its workforce to better align with its “financial reality and a more concentrated set of priorities.”

In November, Boeing successfully completed a $24.3 billion equity offering as part of its strategy to enhance its financial stability and maintain its investment-grade credit rating.

A related notice in November indicated that Boeing would reduce its workforce by more than 2,500 employees across Washington, Oregon, South Carolina, and Missouri, with Washington state being home to the company’s largest workforce of over 60,000 people, where it primarily manufactures its commercial jets.
