British teenager Mika Stojsavljevic breaks 15-year record by winning US Open junior title: UK News
A British teenager has made history by winning the US Open junior title, becoming the first player from the UK to do so in 15 years.
Mika Stojsavljevic, aged 15, secured victory by defeating her Japanese opponent Wakana Sonobe with a score of 6-4 6-4 in New York on Saturday.
Stojsavljevic’s win came one day after Jack Draper fell short in the semi-finals against world number one Jannik Skinner in the men’s draw.
The last British player to win the girl’s title at the US Open was Heather Watson in 2009, while Andy Murray clinched the boy’s title in 2004.
Following her strong performance in the semi-final, where she defeated Iva Jovic, a 16-year-old American who reached the second round of the main women’s draw, Stojsavljevic continued with a solid showing in the final.
In her post-win interview, she expressed her excitement and gratitude towards her coaches and family for their support. She mentioned her nerve-wracking experience and the importance of trusting her serve during the crucial moments.
