Chicago Colors Its River Bright Green to Kick Off St. Patrick’s Day Festivities
CHICAGO—The Chicago River has once again transformed into a vibrant kelly green as the city kicks off its annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
On Saturday, thousands gathered along the river and filled the bridges, erupting into cheers as members of the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Union Local 130 sprayed dye from boats, continuing a tradition they’ve upheld for approximately 63 years.
This dyeing event takes place just before the downtown St. Patrick’s Day parade, which occurs on Monday this year, celebrating Irish heritage. St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is credited with introducing Christianity to the country in the fifth century.
The dye used is nontoxic, and while the river remains brilliantly colored for several hours, some remnants of the hue may linger for days.
A second St. Patrick’s Day parade is set to take place on Sunday on Chicago’s South Side.
