Coalition Initiates New Recall Initiative to Oust California Governor
The coalition intends to serve Governor Gavin Newsom with legal documents this week.
The initiative was launched at a retail location in Los Angeles on Thursday, with various speakers slated to address attendees as they aimed to gather a minimum of 50 signatures to kick off the recall.
“We simply cannot endure two more years of Gavin Newsom … it’s just not feasible,” said Saving California Chairman Randy Economy in an interview with The Epoch Times on Wednesday. “The top priority right now is certainly not California.”
“He lacks a hands-on approach to governance,” Economy stated.
Among the recall advocates who were set to speak on Thursday and sign the intent letter were Economy; Bishop Juan Carlos, the founder of Churches in Action; Robert Kennedy III; Fraser Ross, owner of Kitson; and Chef Andrew Gruel, a chef from Orange County and television personality who assisted in providing food and services to fire evacuees this month.
In their intent letter, the organizers assert that Newsom’s tenure has been characterized by a “series of catastrophic failures“ that “directly impact” their everyday lives.
“His gross mismanagement during the wildfires in Los Angeles County, coupled with insufficient resources and delayed responses, has left communities devastated,” the coalition stated in the letter.
Saving California further cited escalating crime rates, rising living costs, increased homelessness, the drug crisis, and border issues as additional reasons for the recall.
Newsom has completed half of his second term. The Saving California group plans to serve the governor with an intent letter this week.
In response to the recall campaign’s announcement on Wednesday afternoon, Newsom’s political team highlighted several past unsuccessful attempts.

“Governor Newsom is prioritizing the firefighting efforts and organizing resources for comprehensive recovery—not engaging in politics,” remarked political spokesman Nathan Click to The Epoch Times in an email.
Click, who acts as the governor’s political adviser, previously led communication strategies for Newsom during the last recall effort in 2021.
“This same group of far-right Trump supporters has initiated [seven] different recall endeavors against the governor since he assumed office, all of which have failed dramatically,” Click asserted. “Even leadership within the Republican Party has condemned these repeated endeavors as a blatant campaign finance ‘grift,’ and the recall organizers have faced lawsuits from their own donors regarding previously raised funds.”
The progressive California governor is currently facing public criticism following significant wildfires in Los Angeles County this month.
“Our water system became critically low—especially for firefighters—resulting in instances of insufficient water pressure while they battled the blaze,” stated San Digiovanna, chief of the Verdugo Fire Academy in Glendale, during the firefighting operations.
If the group succeeds, Newsom would become the second California governor ever to be removed from office by voters.
In 2003, Governor Gray Davis, a Democrat, was recalled by voters with 55 percent support following public outrage concerning his management of the state’s electricity industry. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican, subsequently succeeded him.

The Saving California recall campaign is in its initial stages, still needing to gather signatures and complete many additional steps before being considered for a ballot, but organizers are optimistic about their success.
“We reside in a democracy,” Economy commented. “He works for the people, a fact he seems to overlook as he pursues his agenda.
“This time things will be different.”
