Critics of Joe Biden Express Deep Concern Over President’s ‘Limited’ Memory, US News Reports

Despite not facing charges, the report by a Justice Department Special Counsel delivers a damning assessment of the mental state of President Joe Biden.

In over 200 pages, Robert Hur explains why President Joe Biden will not be charged for holding classified information after leaving his role as vice president. Essentially, the report concludes that a conviction would be unlikely due to Biden being perceived as “a well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory… someone for whom many jurors will want to identify reasonable doubt”.

For any sitting president, this portrayal would be damning. But for President Biden, it’s particularly troubling as he faces growing questions about his age and mental capability.

On Thursday, his spokesperson downplayed recent slip-ups, including confusing French President Emmanuel Macron with his predecessor from three decades ago, Francois Mitterrand, as well as mixing up German Chancellor Merkel with her predecessor Helmut Kohl. Additionally, Biden couldn’t remember the name ‘Hamas’ when discussing the war in Gaza.

This report will heighten concerns about his fitness for office and will fuel criticism from his opponents. In response to the Hur report, Richard Sauber, special counsel to the president, and Bob Bauer, Biden’s personal counsel, expressed disagreement with the report’s treatment of President Biden’s memory, stating that it uses “highly prejudicial language to describe a commonplace occurrence among witnesses: a lack of recall of years-old events.”
