CrowdStrike, the cybersecurity firm behind last week’s major global IT crash, has attributed the chaos to a bug in its quality control mechanism.
According to CrowdStrike’s investigation update on the ongoing crisis, a code error evaded the company’s safety protocols, leading to crashes on computers running Microsoft’s Windows operating system.
The root cause of Friday’s outage – which disrupted systems worldwide affecting everything from flights to health services – was traced back to the Falcon Sensor developed by the company.

This platform is designed to safeguard systems from malicious software and cyber threats.
“Due to a bug in the Content Validator, one of the two Template Instances passed validation despite containing problematic content data,” explained CrowdStrike.
The company did not disclose details of the content data or why it was problematic.
A ‘Template Instance’ provides instructions for the software on threat detection and response mechanisms.
