David Cameron set to meet with Donald Trump during US visit | Political updates
Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron is scheduled to meet with Donald Trump in Florida on Tuesday, followed by talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
Lord Cameron will first meet with Mr Trump, then travel to Washington DC for discussions with Mr Blinken, other members of the Biden administration, and Congress, as stated by a Foreign Office spokesperson.
“His discussions in Washington will cover various shared US-UK priorities, such as garnering international support for Ukraine and fostering stability in the Middle East,” the spokesperson noted.
The spokesperson downplayed Lord Cameron‘s visit to see former US President Mr Trump, who is running for re-election in the upcoming November US election.
“It is standard procedure for ministers to meet with opposition candidates as part of their regular international engagements,” they clarified.
Lord Cameron does not have a meeting scheduled with current US President Joe Biden.
Yesterday, the foreign secretary urged the US to deliver on a aid package for Ukraine.
In an op-ed co-authored with his French counterpart Stephane Sejourne, he emphasized: “Ukraine must emerge victorious in this conflict. If Ukraine falls, we all face defeat.”
“The consequences of failing to assist Ukraine now will outweigh the costs of deterring Putin,” they added.
In a recent social media post, Lord Cameron expressed his intention to use his visit to the US to pressure America into contributing financial support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.

“Britain has allocated funds for Ukraine this year, as has the European Union,” he mentioned. “It’s imperative for America to do the same. However, this is currently stalled in Congress.
“Speaker Johnson has the power to make it happen in Congress. I plan to meet with him next week to emphasize the necessity of this funding for Ukraine,” Lord Cameron added.
“The security of America, Europe, and Britain is at stake in Ukraine, and they require our assistance.”
Meanwhile, Trump has claimed he could swiftly negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine if elected, a US media report revealed on Monday.
If Trump returns to the White House, he plans to pressure Ukraine to relinquish their territory, suggesting that Ukraine should hand over Crimea and the Donbas border region to Russia, as reported by the Washington Post.
This policy would be seen as “rewarding Vladimir Putin” and “acquiescing to the breach of internationally recognized borders through force,” caution foreign policy experts.
