Democrat Mike Zimmer Declares Win in Iowa State Senate Special Election
Democratic candidate Mike Zimmer has triumphed over Republican opponent Kate Whittington to represent Senate District 35, as per unofficial results.
Mike Zimmer, the Democratic candidate, has emerged victorious against his Republican counterpart Kate Whittington after Tuesday’s special election aimed at filling the seat left vacant by GOP Sen. Chris Cournoyer in Iowa’s Senate.
Sen. Cournoyer resigned from his position representing Iowa Senate District 35—which encompasses Clinton County and parts of Scott and Jackson counties—last December to take on the role of Iowa’s new lieutenant governor.
Provided the results are confirmed, Zimmer will complete the remainder of Cournoyer’s term, which runs through 2026.
Zimmer expressed his eagerness to “advocate for the people of Eastern Iowa, helping working Iowans get ahead, supporting our public schools and teachers, and working to reduce the cost of living.”
According to his website, he also holds the position of board president for Central DeWitt School.
Democrats Celebrate ‘Earthquake Victory’
Whittington, the Republican candidate, ran on promises to reduce soaring inflation, enhance community safety, restore Iowa schools, and manage property taxes.
She has not commented on Zimmer’s apparent win, and her campaign website is currently unavailable.
“In a deeply Republican district where Trump won by 21 points, DLCC candidate Mike Zimmer achieved a significant win …” Williams stated. “This victory marks the first flip of the cycle and builds upon essential majority-making wins in Virginia earlier this month.”
Williams noted that Democrats “have numerous special elections ahead—we’re only just beginning.”
DNC Executive Director Sam Cornale also recognized Zimmer’s win, asserting that Democrats are “prepared to advocate for our rights and for a government that prioritizes the needs of working Americans.”
Cornale remarked that sentiments are already shifting against Trump, who assumed office early this month.
Nonetheless, Republicans will maintain substantial majorities in both legislative chambers.
