Dodgers Make Comeback Victory in World Series Game 5, Defeat Yankees 7-6 After Trailing by 5 Runs

The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their second World Series title in five seasons by overcoming a five-run deficit with the help of three defensive errors by the Yankees. Gavin Lux and Mookie Betts’ sacrifice flies in the eighth inning led the Dodgers to a 7-6 victory over New York in Game 5 on Wednesday night.
Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, Alex Verdugo’s RBI single forced Jack Flaherty out in the second inning, and Giancarlo Stanton’s homer against Ryan Brasier in the third inning contributed to the Yankees’ early 5-0 lead.
However, errors by Judge and Anthony Volpe, combined with pitcher Gerrit Cole’s mistake of not covering first base on Betts’s grounder, allowed Los Angeles to score five unearned runs in the fifth inning.
After Stanton’s sacrifice fly regained the lead for the Yankees in the sixth, the Dodgers loaded the bases in the eighth against Tommy Kahnle, ultimately scoring the winning runs on sacrifice flies off Luke Weaver.
Blake Treinen, the winning pitcher, managed to escape a dangerous situation in the bottom of the eighth by retiring Stanton and striking out Anthony Rizzo.
Walker Buehler, in his first relief appearance since his rookie season in 2018, pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the save.
