Donald Trump will be returning to the White House after securing a stunning victory in the US election against Democratic opponent Kamala Harris.

Having served previously as president from 2017 to 2021, Mr. Trump won his first swing state in North Carolina. He then went on to win Georgia, which he narrowly lost to Joe Biden in 2020, and Pennsylvania, considered the most crucial battleground state. He clinched victory by winning the state of Wisconsin, surpassing 270 electoral college votes and is set to claim all seven swing states.

In contrast, Ms. Harris’ aides had initially announced that she would not be speaking until later on Wednesday as her path to victory grew narrower and defeat seemed inevitable.

Instead of delivering a historic victory speech at Howard University in Washington DC, the lectern where her supporters had hoped she would stand was covered with rain protection. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump celebrated his victory with his supporters in Palm Beach, Florida, hours before the official election result was confirmed.
