Doritos to Introduce Alcoholic Beverage in Nacho Cheese Flavor Inspired by Crisps
Crisp lovers will soon be able to purchase an alcoholic beverage that mimics the flavor of Doritos. The American brand has announced that its Nacho Cheese crisps will be transformed into a spirit.
They assure customers that the drink will have the same smell and taste as the actual crisps, thanks to a collaboration with drinks company Empirical. The spirit will provide the “iconic Nacho Cheese flavor in a bottle,” according to Doritos.
The limited-release 42% alcohol will be made using real crisps and extracting their essence through vacuum distillation, a process that operates at lower temperatures to preserve the flavors, the two companies explained.
Not fitting into the traditional categories of gin or whiskey, the companies suggest that the new drink can be enjoyed in a Margarita, Bloody Mary, Old Fashioned, or simply neat or over ice.
The Doritos brand is owned by PepsiCo subsidiary Frito-Lay Inc, which also produces popular American crisp brands like Lays, Cheetos, and Sun Chips.
“Doritos is all about disrupting culture and bringing our fans unexpected, bold experiences,” said Tina Mahal, senior vice president of marketing for Frito-Lay North America. “We’re always pushing our fans to try new things, so we figure it’s time we disrupt the spirits category by offering our iconic Nacho Cheese flavor in a bottle.”

In the 1980s, Frito-Lay acquired the British snack manufacturer Walkers, explaining why some of the snacks in the two countries are extremely similar or the same. For example: Lays/Walkers and Sun Chips/Sun Bites.
The US Nacho Cheese flavor of Doritos is the equivalent of Tangy Cheese Doritos in the UK.
Customers can already pre-order the new alcoholic drink, and it will be on shelves in select New York and California markets next month, for an estimated price of $65 (£51).
