Elwood Edwards, the Voice Behind AOL’s Iconic ‘You’ve Got Mail’ Greeting, Passes Away at 74
Elwood Edwards, known for voicing America Online’s iconic “You’ve got mail” greeting, has passed away at the age of 74.
His daughter, Heather Edwards, confirmed that he died at his home in New Bern, North Carolina, due to complications from a stroke he suffered late last year.
In 1989, Edwards recorded the famous AOL greeting in his living room, which later became a popular catchphrase and inspired a movie title. He also voiced other messages for AOL like “Welcome,” “Goodbye,” and “File’s done,” earning $200 for the recordings.
He secured the gig through his wife, Karen, who worked as a customer service representative for the company that would become AOL. Edwards got the opportunity while working at a TV station in Washington.
Despite being a voice heard by millions, Edwards preferred to remain behind the scenes, prompting him to say, “I have a face for radio.” In 1999, his identity as the AOL voice was revealed, leading to public recognition.
He made notable appearances on TV shows like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and lent his voice to an episode of “The Simpsons.” Edwards initially worked in radio, then transitioned to television, where he excelled as an announcer and weatherman.
Described as a “graphics guru,” Edwards later worked at WKYC-TV in Cleveland, handling various roles in production. He also did freelance voice-over work for commercials.
Survived by his daughters, granddaughter, and brother, a memorial service for Edwards will be held in New Bern on Monday.
