Explosion at Hawaiian Beachside Resort Injures Seven and Sends Debris Flying
HONOLULU—A suspected gas explosion in the grilling area of a beachfront resort in Hawaii has left seven individuals injured, three of whom are in critical condition, as reported by hotel management and Maui police.
The incident occurred Thursday night at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach, a well-known tourist destination dotted with hotels, timeshares, and rental properties along its pristine sands. The resort is situated a few miles north of downtown Lahaina, which was nearly fully destroyed in a tragic wildfire in 2023.
According to the Maui Police Department, residents nearby were not required to evacuate, and early investigations indicated that liquefied petroleum gas, used for the barbecue grills in the resort’s communal area, was likely involved in the explosion.
The ages of the seven injured individuals varied from 18 to 74, as stated by police. Two of those critically injured were transported to Oahu for medical care, as confirmed by police spokesperson Alana Pico on Friday.
Footage shared on social media captured the explosion occurring outdoors close to a swimming pool, with debris scattered around the beachfront area.
The Whaler confirmed that the detonation took place in the barbecuing area of their Tower One.
“We are currently collaborating with the fire department to thoroughly investigate the matter, and we will provide updates as soon as additional information is available,” the statement noted. “The safety and welfare of our owners, guests, and staff is our utmost concern.”
Authorities stated that the official cause of the explosion is still being investigated, and eyewitnesses have suggested there may have been “a grill malfunction” prior to the incident.
