FBI: Harris Campaign Targeted by ‘Foreign Actor Influence Operation’ | US News

The FBI has informed Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign that it was targeted by a “foreign actor influence operation.”

In a statement shared with Sky News’s US partner network NBC News, Ms. Harris’s campaign stated: “In July, the campaign legal and security teams were notified by the FBI that we were targeted by a foreign actor influence operation.

“We have strong cybersecurity measures in place and are not aware of any security breaches of our systems resulting from these efforts.

“We continue to communicate with appropriate law enforcement authorities.”

This follows Donald Trump‘s campaign claim over the weekend that it was hacked by Iran in June, during the selection of his vice presidential candidate.

News website Politico received emails in July from an anonymous source offering documents from within the former president’s operation, including a report on running mate JD Vance’s “potential vulnerabilities”.

“These documents were illegally obtained from foreign sources hostile to the United States, with the intention of interfering in the 2024 election and causing chaos within our democratic process,” stated Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung earlier this month.

Mr. Cheung later informed NBC that the campaign had been hacked by an Iranian group in June, coinciding with President Trump’s selection of a vice presidential nominee.

This also comes after the FBI announced investigations into hacking attempts on both the Biden-Harris and Trump presidential campaigns on Monday.

This is not the first time there have been allegations of foreign state interference in US elections.

In 2019, analysis by a former senior FBI officer revealed that Russian hackers utilized a technology company owned by a Russian businessman to hack Democratic Party officials.

The year prior, the US sanctioned 19 Russians for alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election.
