FDNY to Pay Tribute to Chaplain Who Supported Firefighters Through 9/11 Tragedy and Beyond
The FDNY will honor Chaplain Monsignor John E. Delendick, who passed away from cancer related to 9/11, in a ceremony dedicating a plaque at the World Trade Center.
Chaplain Monsignor John E. Delendick became FDNY Chaplain in May 1996. In 2001, he experienced the tragic events at the World Trade Center after the second plane hit. Although he survived the towers’ collapse, he later succumbed to cancer linked to the toxic substances from the WTC. Last year, at 74 years old, Delendick passed away. The FDNY declared that he will be recognized on Nov. 22 with a plaque dedication at the WTC, almost a year after his death on Nov. 23, 2023.
Throughout his 28-year FDNY career, Delendick supported the fire department during difficult times. He spent months post-9/11 at the WTC site, conducting numerous memorial services and assisting those who suffered profound losses. The FDNY mentioned that Delendick remained present at FDNY events even years after the attack.
FDNY Retired Captain Gerard Chipura, who lost his brother on September 11, shared a close relationship with Delendick. Chipura recalled how the chaplain provided comfort and support during funerals and memorials.
Delendick’s dedication to the FDNY and his commitment to attending WTC services highlighted his caring nature. Despite battling cancer, he continued to uplift and support FDNY members. Many members remembered him as a compassionate friend, mentor, and spiritual guide. His presence and impact on the FDNY community will be deeply missed.
