Flames Sweep Through Area of Popular Holiday Market in Manhattan
NEW YORK—A holiday market located outdoors in Bryant Park, New York City, experienced a brief fire on Friday morning. The flames and smoke rose above the well-trafficked midtown Manhattan attraction as firefighters hurried to extinguish the flames.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported from the fire, which started in one part of the market shortly after 9 a.m., per a statement from the city’s fire department. According to the spokesperson, at least four shops were affected, and the blaze also caused damage to the roof of a nearby ice skating rink.
The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, though some of the affected shops were known to be serving food.
Images from the incident depicted numerous firefighters surrounding the charred ruins of several wooden stalls.
This longstanding open-air market boasts hundreds of vendors selling food and merchandise, attracting large crowds of holiday tourists to the park situated between Times Square and Grand Central Terminal during the festive season.
This incident occurred less than two weeks after a fire devastated another holiday market in Herald Square, destroying eighteen stalls. Authorities attributed that fire to an electrical malfunction.
