While addressing those present as Mr. Trump addressed his supporters, he stated: “The main point I want to make clear today in my farewell address is that we all have more to do. You heard the inaugural address today – there is still much work ahead.”

He paused to make the sign of the cross, eliciting laughter from the audience. Mr. Biden was also seen making the same religious gesture during the inauguration ceremony.

Biden continued: “I understand from years of experience that there will be ups and downs, but we must persevere.

“My father taught me that a person’s character is measured by how quickly they get back up after being knocked down – and that’s what we need to do right now.

“We will never give up – we may be leaving office, but we won’t abandon the fight.”

He encouraged his administration team to “stay involved in any way you can,” whether it be in the public or private sectors or by “running for office yourself.”

“You are intelligent, skilled, and compassionate. Your country needs you again,” he urged.

Expressing gratitude to his former team for their “incredible” contributions, he remarked that it has been “the honor of my life to serve as your president,” adding, “It’s an even greater honor to serve alongside all of you.”

As he concluded his speech, cheers of “Thank you Joe” filled the air before he and his wife Jill boarded their Nighthawk 46 helicopter, embarking on their post-presidential journey.
