According to reports from US media, former President Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100.
He was both the longest-living former president in US history and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Carter, a member of the Democratic Party, was inaugurated as the 39th president of the United States after defeating Gerald Ford in the 1976 election.
Originally from Georgia, he served one term and lost his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan in 1980.
The conclusion of his presidency was marked by a significant hostage crisis in Iran, which began when 52 Americans were taken hostage at the US embassy in November 1979.
On his last day in office, January 20, 1981, the hostages were freed, following months of negotiations that Carter pursued even after his defeat in the election.
