Four people injured in New York after police confront knife-wielding man over unpaid subway fare | US News
Four individuals were injured at a subway station in New York City after a man who had not paid his rail fare was pursued and shot by police.
Along with the suspect and one of the officers, two innocent bystanders were hit by bullets, possibly from friendly fire.
The standard fare for the New York subway is $2.90 (£2.20).
The incident occurred around 3pm local time on Sunday when two officers followed a man up some steps at Sutter Avenue in Brooklyn after witnessing him enter without paying, as explained by Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
The officers instructed the man to stop, but he refused, stating “I’m going to kill you if you don’t stop following me,” according to Mr Maddrey. He also mentioned that the man was carrying a knife.
After boarding a train that had arrived at the station, the officers deployed two tasers, but both failed to incapacitate the man, Mr Maddrey reported.
Mr Maddrey stated that the man was approaching the officers with the knife when both officers fired multiple shots.
The 37-year-old man sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

A video recorded by a bystander captures the officers providing first aid to the man, only to realize that one of them had also been hit by a bullet.
One passenger, a 49-year-old man, was struck by a bullet that crossed into an adjacent subway car and hit his head, leaving him in critical condition.
Another passenger, a 26-year-old woman, sustained a minor graze wound. The wounded police officer had a bullet enter his torso under his armpit and lodge in his back but is anticipated to fully recover.
