Garland Urges DOJ to Uphold Justice and Adhere to Standards in Farewell Address
According to him, the principles include ensuring the independence of the DOJ’s investigations and prosecutions from both Congress and the White House.
In his final speech at the Department of Justice on January 16, Attorney General Merrick Garland urged his colleagues to “uphold our principles” and focus on justice rather than politics.
Garland emphasized that these principles include ensuring the independence of the DOJ’s investigations and prosecutions from both Congress and the White House.
The departing attorney general also responded to allegations suggesting that the Justice Department is politically biased and corrupt, a sentiment echoed by President-elect Donald Trump and his supporters.
“The narrative being circulated by some outside this building regarding our operations is incorrect. You have strived to pursue justice, not politics,“ Garland asserted in his address. ”That is the reality, and it cannot be altered.”
Following Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election, the charges were dropped as the DOJ’s interpretation of the U.S. Constitution indicates that a sitting president should not be prosecuted.
In his farewell address, Garland also pointed out that the attorney general’s duty is to “clarify that the only way for the Justice Department to act rightly is to do so properly.”
Meanwhile, Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Pam Bondi, faced intense scrutiny from lawmakers during Wednesday’s Senate confirmation hearings. Bondi asserted that she would avoid political maneuvering as attorney general and pledged to lead a Justice Department that is free from political bias.
