Gaza protest interrupts Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York for the second consecutive year | US News

The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in New York has faced disruption for the second consecutive year due to protests over the conflict in Gaza.

Despite the steady rain, New Yorkers turned out in ponchos and with umbrellas to enjoy the 98th edition of the event, featuring balloons, floats, live performances, and marching bands.

However, New York City police reported the arrest of 21 individuals as protesters attempted to block the parade route, specifically near the Ronald McDonald float.

Carrying Palestinian flags and a banner with messages against celebrating genocide and calling for an arms embargo, protesters faced clashes with police before being removed from the parade route.

Similar disruptions had occurred during last year’s parade as well.

Despite the disruptions, the parade drew a large crowd, with performances by Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Hudson, and other artists, culminating in Santa Claus’s arrival on a giant sleigh.

The event featured new character balloons including Spider-Man and Minnie Mouse, alongside themed floats such as a tribute to New York’s coffee and bagels and a celebration of the Bronx Zoo’s 125th anniversary.

The procession covered a 2.5-mile route from West 77th Street and Central Park West to Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street.
