Giant Pineapple-sized Hail Stone Uncovered by Storm Chasers in Texas, Potentially Breaking State Record | US News
Storm trackers in Texas have recovered a massive pineapple-sized hail stone that could potentially break the state record.
Val and Amy Castor, experienced storm chasers with Oklahoma City television station KWTV, came across a hailstone measuring nearly 18cm in length over the weekend.
They found the hailstone near Vigo Park while pursuing a large thunderstorm system.
Val Castor described the hailstone as being similar in size to a pineapple.
“That’s the largest hail I’ve ever encountered, and I’ve been storm chasing for over 30 years,” he remarked.
He mentioned that several hailstones the size of baseballs hit his vehicle, with one even causing a crack in his windshield, before he noticed the massive piece in a ditch by the roadside.
“I could spot it from approximately 100 yards away,” he added.
The enormous hailstone is speculated to set a new state record, surpassing a 16.25cm specimen discovered in Hondo in 2021.
However, official confirmation is still pending from a team of researchers that includes the Texas state climatologist.
