Governors and Attorneys General Unveil Strategies to Challenge Trump Administration’s Policies
Leaders of at least five states have announced their intentions to challenge the policies of the incoming administration. States such as California, New York, Illinois, Washington, and New Jersey are gearing up to contest President-elect Donald Trump’s policies on immigration, abortion, and environmental regulations once he assumes office on Jan. 20.
California Governor Gavin Newsom has called for a special session of the Legislature starting on Dec. 2 to protect the state’s values and fundamental rights. According to Newsom, California has experience in facing such challenges and is well-prepared to respond to ensure the well-being of its residents.
During Trump’s first term, California filed over 120 lawsuits against his administration. Newsom emphasized the state’s successful strategy in standing up for its values and people’s rights.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed a willingness to work with Trump on mutual beneficial projects. She highlighted the importance of supporting the state’s infrastructure projects, repealing certain tax deductions, and promoting economic development initiatives.
Similarly, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker acknowledged the challenges states faced during Trump’s first term but stated that Illinois is prepared for the coming years. Pritzker expressed his readiness to meet with Trump and work together for the common good.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy emphasized the importance of uniting diverse perspectives and working towards the common good. He commended Trump for his support in certain projects and vowed to fight against any threats to the state or its people while seeking common ground for collaboration.
Washington’s governors, both incoming and outgoing, affirmed the state’s readiness to legally challenge the Trump administration if its values are at stake. Governor-elect Bob Ferguson reiterated the preparedness of his administration to take on the federal government if necessary.
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey also expressed a readiness to challenge the new administration on immigration policies, particularly in refusing to cooperate with federal requests to participate in deporting illegal immigrants.
The Trump team responded by acknowledging the broad victory in many states, counties, and cities across the nation. They emphasized President-elect Trump’s focus on fulfilling his campaign promises and delivering results for all Americans.
