Governor’s Dire Warning: Hawaii Wildfires Claim Lives of at least 89, Anticipates Further Fatalities | US News

At least 89 people have been confirmed dead after wildfires in Hawaii – with the state’s governor warning there will be more fatalities.

The updated figure means it is the deadliest wildfire the US has seen in the past century – surpassing the 85 who died in California five years ago.

Going further back to 1918, a fire raced through rural communities in a drought-stricken part of Minnesota and killed hundreds.

Governor Josh Green told reporters that it has been “an impossible day for us” – but fire crews and police officers have been “extraordinary” in their efforts to help citizens and bring the fires under control.
