Harvey Weinstein Alleges Inadequate Medical Care and Poor Hygiene at Rikers Island Jail in Legal Claim
NEW YORK—Harvey Weinstein’s legal team filed a claim against New York City on Tuesday, alleging substandard medical care and unhygienic conditions for Weinstein at Rikers Island jail complex, where he is currently in custody.
The claim, the initial step in a potential lawsuit, accuses Rikers Island of inadequate management of Weinstein’s medical conditions, such as chronic myeloid leukemia and diabetes, as well as negligence in providing proper care and essentials like clean clothes.
Both the city’s law department and Department of Correction have not responded to requests for comment.
Weinstein’s lawyer, Imran H. Ansari, stated that during a recent visit, he observed unsanitary conditions for someone with serious health issues, likening the facility to a “gulag.”
Weinstein, aged 72, has been in city custody since earlier this year after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned. A retrial is scheduled for 2025, with Weinstein maintaining his innocence.
Weinstein has experienced health complications, being hospitalized in April and July for various issues including diabetes, high blood pressure, and COVID-19.
The claim seeks $5 million in damages, arguing that Weinstein was sent back to Rikers before fully recovering each time.
Weinstein’s film production company entered bankruptcy after his convictions, establishing a $17 million fund for sexual misconduct claims.
Rikers Island jail is set to close in 2027, though the city has postponed deadlines for closure.
