Heir of Levi Strauss Takes the Lead in San Francisco Mayor’s Race
Mayor London Breed is currently trailing her opponent Daniel Lurie by 12 points and has not yet conceded the race.
Daniel Lurie, a philanthropist and an heir to the Levi Strauss fortune, seems to be on track to defeat San Francisco Mayor London Breed in her reelection bid as the city continues to count election results on Nov. 6.
Lurie is leading Breed by 12 points as of Wednesday morning, with 56 percent of the vote compared to the incumbent’s 44 percent.
Breed has not conceded yet, stating that she will wait until all votes are counted.
“It ain’t over till it’s over,” she told supporters at an election night party on Tuesday.
She mentioned that she was also behind in her first mayoral race in 2019 but ultimately won the office. Breed made history as the first black woman to serve as mayor of San Francisco.
The county has not certified the results yet and is expected to release preliminary numbers around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the Department of Elections.
The county is still processing approximately 157,000 ballots, mostly vote-by-mail ballots received on Monday and Tuesday by mail or at polling places, according to a press release from the elections department provided to The Epoch Times on Wednesday.
Additionally, the county has 20,000 provisional ballots to process, which were cast at polling locations by voters not on the registration list.
The county may take up to 30 days after Election Day to certify the final results.
Lurie, Breed’s challenger, expressed readiness to begin working, as indicated in a letter to his supporters posted on social media and his website.
He thanked his supporters on Tuesday night, stating that the city was ready for change.
Lurie emphasized the need for leadership based on true public service that prioritizes the people of San Francisco.
In the race to replace Breed, Lurie spent over $9 million of his own money and raised more than $16 million, according to financial reports.
Lurie, the son of Rabbi Brian Lurie and Miriam “Mimi” Lurie Haas, established Tipping Point Community, a San Francisco nonprofit that supports impoverished individuals in the Bay Area.
Breed, a native San Franciscan raised in the city’s public housing by her grandmother, has focused on addressing various challenges such as retail closures, tech departures, and homelessness in the city.
