Seth Rogen believes that film studios and streaming giants cannot agree on terms because they “hate each other,” as the 100th day of the Hollywood writers’ strike passes without any sign of resolution. Both actors and writers are striking for the first time since 1960, causing a standstill in the film and TV industry and economic turmoil in Los Angeles. Traditional film studios such as Disney, Universal, and Warner Brothers, along with streaming giants like Amazon and Netflix, are represented in negotiations by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). However, Rogen, who is an actor, writer, and executive producer, claims that they have vastly different priorities. “The studios haven’t even spoken to each other, is what I’ve heard,” Rogen told Sky News. He added, “So not only does it seem as though the writers and actors have a great distance to go when it comes to the studios, I think the studios have a great distance to go, probably a greater one, when it goes to them getting on the same page. These are people who hate each other. To think that Universal has the same priorities as Netflix is insane.” Rogen expressed concern that the studios will be unable to present a coherent proposal due to their infighting and conflicting interests. The main sticking points for actors and writers are dwindling pay and concerns regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI) controls. AI threatens creativity in filmmaking and raises questions about the authenticity and value of human contributions. However, some actors, like Sheryl Lee Ralph, Emmy-nominated actress, are open to selling their digital likeness after death, as long as they have given consent and received compensation. Ralph emphasizes the need for fair treatment and compensation, as exemplified by Diana Ross’ quote, “If you need me, pay me.” The public perception of AI in film is crucial, as it faces skepticism and fear. Flawless AI, a prominent AI company in film, has developed TrueSync, a system that enhances dubbed films by altering actors’ mouth movements to match translated dialogue. Nick Lynes, the Chief Executive of Flawless AI, acknowledges the public’s concerns but argues that the issue lies in how AI is utilized rather than the technology itself. The ongoing strike, now one of the longest and most intense in Hollywood history, is expected to continue into autumn, disrupting TV schedules, film promotions, and the early part of the awards season.
