Honolulu Reports 6th Fatality Due to Large Explosion of Illegal Fireworks Over New Year’s Celebrations
HONOLULU—On Wednesday, a sixth individual succumbed to injuries received when crates of illegal fireworks exploded during a New Year’s Eve celebration in a Honolulu neighborhood, triggering a series of blasts that caused severe burns to over a dozen others.
The 30-year-old woman passed away at a local hospital around 5:59 a.m., as reported by the Honolulu Police Department.
The deceased include a 3-year-old boy, three women, and one man.
The incident has renewed demands for stricter enforcement of illegal fireworks, which have become increasingly prevalent in Hawaii. The unlawful explosives disrupt communities year-round, with incidents surging during the holiday season.
Thus far, police have arrested 10 individuals connected to the explosion. They face charges of reckless endangerment, jeopardizing minors’ welfare, and multiple fireworks-related offenses.
Authorities are collaborating with prosecutors to bring charges; however, the process is delayed due to the number of arrests, the extensive evidence being reviewed, and the analysis of the fireworks involved.
Authorities recovered 500 pounds of unused fireworks from the site.
Police anticipate further arrests in connection with the incident.
Hawaii Governor Josh Green has proposed permitting law enforcement to issue $300 fines to individuals who discharge fireworks, alongside potential Class A felony charges and lengthy prison sentences for those whose actions result in serious injury or death due to fireworks. The state Department of Law Enforcement has requested $5.2 million from the Legislature to hire eight personnel and expand a forensic lab to combat growing fireworks smuggling.
Last month, six injured individuals were transported to a burn center in Arizona for treatment, as Hawaii’s sole burn care facility had reached capacity due to the incident. One individual, a 29-year-old man, tragically passed away last week.
