House Democratic Caucus Discusses Race for Leadership Role on Oversight Committee
Reps. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) are competing to take the lead for Democrats on the important panel next term.
WASHINGTON—The contest for the leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee has highlighted a split between the moderate and progressive factions of the party.
The New Democrat Coalition, a group of moderate lawmakers, has endorsed Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) to head the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee, while the Congressional Progressive Caucus has thrown its support behind Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).
The GOP will hold a slim majority in the House, thereby gaining control of the committees.
“Connolly is a capable communicator and a diligent advocate ready to effectively lead the committee in upholding our Democratic principles and countering the extremist actions of the Trump administration. He is the ideal choice to advance the interests of our entire caucus,” stated the group’s chair, Rep. Annie Kuster (D-N.H.), along with incoming chair, Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), noting Connolly’s 16 years of service on the committee.
“As we brace for the new Trump administration and a Republican-led Congress, the Democrats on the Oversight Committee will play a pivotal role in safeguarding our democratic institutions and pushing back against bad faith actors.”
“Our constituents need assurance that we will advocate fiercely for their priorities,” he expressed in a letter to his Democratic colleagues.
Connolly has represented Virginia’s 11th Congressional District since 2009.
This caucus, which comprises 100 House Democrats and one senator—independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who aligns with the Democrats—highlighted Ocasio-Cortez’s commitment to holding Big Pharma accountable and her efforts for lower drug prices. Ocasio-Cortez is also a member of this caucus.
“Now, more than ever, we need to reinforce the committee’s essential role in holding administrations accountable and addressing the economic insecurities and inequalities that threaten the American way of life,” she stated.
She committed to collaborating with Republicans “on constructive, shared interests that serve the American people whenever possibilities arise.”
Ocasio-Cortez, who has served as the committee’s vice-ranking member, has represented New York’s 14th Congressional District since 2019.
