Hurricane Helene: Tragic Discovery of Couple Embraced in Bed Following Storm
A grandson has revealed that a couple tragically killed during Hurricane Helene in the US were found hugging each other in bed. Jerry Savage, 78, and his wife Marcia, 74, were sheltering with family members at their home in Beech Island, South Carolina, as winds of up to 140mph (225kmh) raged outside.
John Savage, one of their grandchildren, heard branches snap and went to check on the couple in their bedroom. He found them both fine, lying in bed. However, a short time later, a massive tree on the property crashed into their bedroom, causing their tragic deaths.
Mr Savage described how the family believed it was “God’s plan” for them to die together rather than one suffer without the other. He mentioned how his grandfather tried to protect his grandmother as the tree fell on them.

The couple, Jerry and Marcia, had been married for over 50 years and were described as a loving pair by their daughter Tammy Estep. Jerry was an electrician and carpenter, while Marcia was a retired bank teller active in her church.
The tragic couple are among the more than 150 victims who lost their lives during Hurricane Helene, one of the deadliest storms in US history. The storm caused extensive damage, claiming many lives as trees fell on homes and vehicles, with even firefighters losing their lives due to fallen trees.
Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc across multiple states, causing floods, mudslides, and disruptions in communication networks.
