Inside Out 2 breaks $1bn mark at global box office, the first movie of 2024 to do so | Entertainment & Arts Update
Inside Out has achieved a major milestone by becoming the first film of the year to surpass $1 billion in worldwide box office revenue, making it the highest grossing film of the year so far.
It accomplished this feat faster than any animated film in history, overtaking Warner Brothers’ Barbie which achieved the same milestone last year.
Since its release on June 14, Inside Out has maintained the top position at the box office for three consecutive weekends.
This collaboration between Pixar and Walt Disney revolves around a young girl named Riley and the emotions she encounters while growing up (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust).
The sequel to the successful first movie, released in 2015, introduces new emotions such as Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, reflecting Riley’s journey into adolescence.
The film has successfully attracted the teenage demographic (ages 13-17) back to theaters.
‘Audiences will respond to compelling, entertaining movies’
The voice cast includes Amy Poehler, Maya Hawke, and Kensington Tallman, with direction by Kelsey Mann.
Praising the achievement, Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, stated: “On behalf of movie theatre owners worldwide, we congratulate Disney’s Inside Out 2 for reaching $1 billion in revenue faster than any animated movie in history.”
“The film’s global success underscores the universal appeal of compelling and entertaining movies that audiences want to experience on the big screen.”
Inside Out 2 joins the ranks of only 11 animated films to surpass $1 billion in revenue, alongside hits like Finding Dory, Frozen, and the Toy Story series.
The next highly anticipated family film of the year is Despicable Me 4 from Universal and Illumination, set to release in the UK in July and starring Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, and Joey King.
Inside Out 2 is currently showing in UK cinemas.
