Investigators Discover Third Victim in Fiery Wyoming Highway Tunnel Collision
GREEN RIVER, Wyo.—Authorities confirmed the discovery of a third victim on Sunday in the aftermath of a devastating multi-vehicle crash in a Wyoming highway tunnel, which involved 26 cars and trucks.
At least five individuals sustained serious injuries during the incident on Friday along Interstate 80, near the small town of Green River, Wyoming. The collision ignited a fire in the tunnel, leading to the total destruction of six commercial trucks and two passenger cars.
By Sunday, most of the debris had been cleared, with fewer than 10 vehicles remaining in the tunnel, according to Sgt. Jason Roascio of the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
However, snowfall was hindering the progress of federal and state investigators as they meticulously examined each vehicle to reconstruct the events of that day, Roascio explained.
“We remain hopeful that this will be the last reported fatality,” Roascio remarked.
Details regarding the identities of the three victims have yet to be disclosed.
Images released on Sunday depicted the burned remnants of two vehicles situated within the tunnel.
The accident occurred in the westbound section of the dual tunnel system beneath Castle Rock, a prominent sandstone formation that towers over Green River in the southwest region of Wyoming.
The wreckage and subsequent blaze caused a complete closure of the interstate, the main east-west route through Wyoming, prompting traffic to be diverted through Green River.
The eastbound tunnel is anticipated to reopen on Wednesday and will temporarily accommodate traffic in both directions. However, engineers have not provided a timeline for the reopening of the westbound tunnel.
