Israel’s move to increase aid to Gaza is a major step forward | US News

The decision to open three routes for humanitarian aid into Gaza by Israel is a significant step in this conflict that began six months ago.

It comes after a conversation between President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

I’ve been informed that the conversation was tense and challenging, but there were no direct ultimatums issued by the Americans.

The American tone was more of “you’re making it harder and harder for us to support you” rather than “do this, or else”.

The relationship between Biden and Netanyahu has been under strain, and this call seems to be the most difficult moment so far.

Biden has limited levers to effect change, but these announcements signify a real shift.

While there is no confirmed timeline for the implementation of these measures, it is expected to happen in days rather than weeks.

Firstly, Israel’s southern port of Ashdod will be allowed to receive aid for Gaza, which will be a significant change. Previously, the US had to announce the construction of a temporary port off the Gaza shoreline for aid reception. Now, aid can come directly from Cyprus to a fully operational port.

Secondly, the Erez crossing from Israel into the northern Gaza Strip will be open for aid transfers, another pivotal moment. Aid arriving in Ashdod can then be transported to Erez and into the strip.

Thirdly, there will be a simplification of aid movement through the southeastern Kerem Shalom crossing from Israel into Gaza. Details are not clear yet, but military trucks from Jordan may be allowed direct access into Gaza.

Currently, all aid must pass through congested checkpoints in the south, complicated by stringent Israeli security checks. The number of trucks entering Gaza is significantly less than before the war, despite increased need and reduced food production within Gaza.

According to COGAT, the Israeli government body managing aid into Gaza, only 140 food trucks enter Gaza daily now, compared to 500 trucks before the war, with only 70 carrying food. Distribution across the strip, particularly to the north, where the need is highest, has been challenging.

These new policies, once implemented, will have a significant impact. However, they are not expected to bring an end to the conflict.

The Israeli government stated, “This increased aid will prevent a humanitarian crisis and is necessary to ensure the continuation of the fighting and to achieve the goals of the war.”
