JD Vance: US and UK ‘Diligently Negotiating’ Trade Deal, Promising ‘Excellent Agreement’ | UK News
The Vice President of the United States, JD Vance, has stated that the US and the UK are “working very hard” on a trade agreement and he is confident they will arrive at a “great deal”.
Recently, Donald Trump enacted extensive tariffs on imports into the United States, causing significant upheaval in the global economy, leading to a decline in stock prices and raising concerns about a potential worldwide recession.
Following this, Mr. Trump has modified those tariffs, lowering the import tariff rate to 10% for most nations and, as of Saturday, exempting electronics such as smartphones and laptops from the tax, which includes the hefty 145% levy on imports from China.
Before Mr. Trump’s much-discussed “Liberation Day” proclamation regarding global tariff hikes, the UK was already set to encounter a universal 10% duty.
The UK government has remained optimistic about securing an agreement that would exempt the UK from Mr. Trump’s tariffs, and in a recent interview with UnHerd, Mr. Vance expressed his optimism about both sides reaching a mutually advantageous agreement.
“We are certainly working closely with Keir Starmer’s government” on a trade deal, Mr. Vance mentioned.
“The President has a great affection for the United Kingdom. He adored the Queen and has admiration for the King. This relationship is incredibly important. He is also a businessman with several key business associations in [Britain]. But it goes much deeper than that.
“There’s a true cultural bond. Fundamentally, America is an Anglo country.”
“I believe there is a strong possibility that we will arrive at an exceptional agreement that serves the best interests of both nations.”
