Jim Carrey Jokes He Joined Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for the ‘Cash’ | Entertainment & Arts News
Jim Carrey has revealed that he returned from retirement to feature in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 because he “needed the money”.
The Canadian-American actor, who reprises his role as the villain Dr ‘Eggman’ Robotnik for the franchise’s third chapter, shared this insight while speaking to a reporter at the film’s London premiere on Tuesday.
When the reporter inquired, “You mentioned in previous interviews that you would return if you received a script written in gold ink by angels. Is this the script?”
The 62-year-old chuckled and replied: “That may have been an exaggeration, but certainly. You know, I came back to this universe because, firstly, I get to portray a genius.”
“Which is somewhat of a stretch, but, you know, I have purchased a lot of things, and I honestly need the money, yes.”

Carrey had mentioned his retirement during a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood – although he added: “Yeah… probably. I’m being quite serious.
“I cherish my quiet life, enjoy painting, and love my spiritual journey. This is something you might never hear another celebrity admit: I have enough. I’ve accomplished enough. I am enough,” he stated.
He further noted that he would only accept another role “if the angels deliver a script that’s inscribed in gold ink, indicating that it’s essential for audiences to see.”
The first two Sonic films have reportedly grossed a combined total of $725 million (£568 million), ranking among the highest-earning projects Carrey has participated in.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is set to hit UK cinemas on Friday, 20 December.
