John Kerry praises Trump’s ‘unpredictability’ as a strength in negotiations
Former Secretary of State and top climate negotiator John Kerry believes that President-elect Donald Trump’s “unpredictability” can be advantageous when dealing with adversaries. Kerry mentioned during an event at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics that Trump’s unpredictability could make others worry and not know his true intentions, which could be beneficial in negotiations.
Kerry also expressed his hope that Trump’s foreign policy team, likely led by Sen. Marco Rubio, would use this unpredictability to their advantage at the start of negotiations with foreign powers. He believes that Trump wants to reach agreements with countries like Iran and China and hopes Trump can negotiate better on crucial issues than previous administrations.
Despite praising Trump’s negotiating potential, Kerry criticized the president for withdrawing the United States from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which Kerry helped draft. He described the deal as the strongest nuclear agreement the U.S. had signed since the 1950s. Kerry also mentioned that Trump is unlikely to pursue climate policies similar to Biden’s agenda, as he has expressed intentions to boost oil and gas production.
Additionally, Kerry referenced reports of Trump being critical of him for allegedly colluding with Iran regarding the nuclear deal. Trump had dismissed the need for Kerry’s involvement, claiming that the deal negotiated by Kerry created issues and was poorly handled by the previous administration.
