Judge Blocks Donald Trump’s Scheme to Eliminate Federal Employees with Buyouts | US News
A federal judge has issued a temporary block on Donald Trump’s initiative to eliminate government positions by offering financial incentives for employees to resign.
This ruling was announced just hours before the midnight cut-off for employees to sign up for the deferred resignation program, often referred to as a buyout.
US District Judge George O’Toole Jr. in Boston did not provide a judgment regarding the legal status of the program but has scheduled a hearing on Monday at 2 PM local time (10 AM in the UK).
The judge also instructed administration officials to extend the program’s deadline until after this hearing.
In response to this latest development, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told NBC News: “We appreciate the judge extending the deadline, allowing more federal workers who choose not to come into the office to take advantage of this very generous, once-in-a-lifetime offer.”
Multiple labor unions have filed lawsuits against Mr. Trump regarding these plans.
The initiative was developed by billionaire Elon Musk, a key advisor to Mr. Trump.
