Kamala Harris stands by her decision to defend Joe Biden’s ability to serve another four years as president, even after he informed her of his decision to step aside.

President Biden dropped out of the race for the White House in July amidst speculation about his age and fitness, following a disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.

While serving as his vice president, Ms. Harris had publicly supported Mr. Biden’s continuation in office and expressed gratitude for serving in his administration.

“He possesses the intelligence, commitment, judgment, and disposition that the American people rightly expect from their president,” she told CNN. “In contrast, the former president lacks those qualities.”

In her first mainstream media interview after becoming the Democratic nominee, she shared that she was about to start a puzzle with her young nieces when Mr. Biden called.

“The phone rang, it was Joe Biden informing me of his decision, and I asked him if he was sure,” she recalled. “He confirmed, and that’s how I found out about it.”

She mentioned that he had assured her of his endorsement, but her initial concern was for him.

‘My values remain unchanged’

Ms. Harris emphasized that her core values have not shifted, despite some policy adjustments towards the center.

She clarified her stance on issues such as migration along the US-Mexico border and fracking, an energy production technique prevalent in Pennsylvania.

“My value system regarding border security has remained consistent,” she affirmed.

“I served as California’s attorney general for two terms, tackling transnational criminal organizations and enforcing American laws on illegal trafficking of guns, drugs, and humans across our borders.

“My values have not wavered.”

‘Gaza needs a resolution’

Regarding foreign policy, she emphasized the need for a ceasefire and hostage release in Gaza, reiterating her support for Israel while acknowledging the loss of innocent Palestinian lives.

“Israel has the right to self-defense, but the manner in which it exercises that right is crucial,” she stated.

“Far too many innocent Palestinians have suffered, and we must find a resolution.”

She asserted that there have been no alterations to current policy.

Republican inclusion in cabinet

She also discussed the potential inclusion of a Republican in her cabinet, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in decision-making processes.

“It’s essential to have individuals with varying views and experiences at the table during critical decisions,” she explained. “Having a Republican member in my cabinet would benefit the American public.”

She clarified that there is no specific candidate in mind for this role.

‘Next question please’

Responding to a question about President Trump’s claim that she recently started identifying as black, Ms. Harris dismissed it as an old tactic.

“It’s the same tired playbook,” remarked Ms. Harris, whose heritage includes Indian and Jamaican roots.

“Next question, please.”

She has always embraced her entire background and graduated from Howard University, a historically black institution.
