Karoline Leavitt, the youngest press secretary in White House history, is set to officially address the media for the first time since her appointment by Donald Trump.

The 27-year-old has recently fielded questions from journalists on Air Force One, but Tuesday marks her debut in the White House briefing room.

‘Sharp and resilient’

Following his victory over Democratic opponent and former vice president Kamala Harris in November, Mr. Trump announced Ms. Leavitt’s appointment, praising her as “smart, tough, and a highly effective communicator.”

“I have complete confidence she will thrive at the podium and effectively share our message with the American people as we continue to Make America Great Again.”

A staunch Trump supporter from the typically Democrat-leaning state of New Hampshire, Ms. Leavitt previously served as campaign press secretary before joining the president’s team at the White House.

Prior to that, she was a spokeswoman for the MAGA Inc political action committee — known in the US as a super PAC — that supported Mr. Trump, and in 2022, she ran for Congress in New Hampshire, although she was not successful.

Ms. Leavitt, who grew up in the small town of Atkinson and whose family owned an ice cream shop, expressed her gratitude for her appointment as White House press secretary by thanking the president for “believing in me.”

“I am both humbled and honored,” Ms. Leavitt stated in a post on X, adding, “Let’s MAGA!”

‘We have a little boy, but he’s not so little now!’

Many of Ms. Leavitt’s recent Instagram posts have showcased her dual role as a key member of Team Trump and a new mother who returned to work just four days after giving birth.

Reflecting on her decision to end her maternity leave early, Ms. Leavitt recounted to The Conservateur that she was holding her son when she witnessed the attempt on her boss’s life being streamed live in July.

“I looked at my husband and said, ‘It looks like I’m going back to work,'” she remarked.

Previously, Ms. Leavitt shared a video of herself loading a machine gun with the caption ‘Hey Joe Biden… come and take it!’, stating to the outlet in October: “I felt compelled to be present during this historic moment.”

“The president put his life on the line to win this election. The least I could do is return to work swiftly.”

Ms. Leavitt also shared that she received considerable support at work during her pregnancy and after her child’s birth, even receiving a call from President Trump checking in on her well-being.

During that call, the president, who with his wife Melania has 18-year-old Barron, humorously quipped: “We have a little boy, but he’s not so little now!”

How does she relate to the media?

Ms. Leavitt, similar to Mr. Trump, has criticized certain segments of the media for perpetuating “fake news.”

In November of last year, she defended Mr. Trump’s comments about Liz Cheney—one of his most outspoken Republican critics—who he said would not be a “radical war hawk” if she were in a war zone with guns pointed at her.

Before her appointment as press secretary, Ms. Leavitt regularly appeared on the conservative news network, Fox News.

She follows in the footsteps of Mr. Trump’s four previous press secretaries during his first term: Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders (now the governor of Arkansas), Stephanie Grisham, and Kayleigh McEnany, who is now a Fox News contributor.
