Los Angeles County Reports First Measles Case of 2025 and Releases Exposure List

The traveler arrived in Los Angeles from Taiwan.

On March 11, health officials reported that a resident of Los Angeles has been diagnosed with measles.

The unidentified individual arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on a China Airlines flight from Taiwan on March 5, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said.

Two China Airlines flights landed at the airport from Taiwan that day.

The individual arrived at Terminal B of the Southern California airport. Health officials advised that anyone present between 7 p.m. and 10:40 p.m. on March 5 may have been exposed.

Additionally, those who visited Cloud 9 Nail Salon in North Hollywood from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 7, or Superior Grocery Store in El Monte on March 10 between 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. are also at risk of infection.

Health authorities recommend that unvaccinated individuals who were at any of these locations monitor for symptoms from seven to 21 days after exposure.

Those who are vaccinated can still contract the illness; one dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is 93% effective against measles, while two doses increase effectiveness to 97%, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Measles is transmitted via droplets from infected individuals, and the virus can linger in the air and on surfaces for several hours.

County officials emphasized the importance of vaccination, urging anyone who hasn’t received the measles vaccine to get vaccinated.

“With measles outbreaks occurring both domestically and globally, this recent case in our area underscores the necessity for unvaccinated individuals to receive the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine,” stated Dr. Muntu Davis, the health officer for Los Angeles County. He later commented that the vaccine “is the most effective way to safeguard oneself and curb the transmission of this serious disease.”

Symptoms of measles include a fever exceeding 101 degrees Fahrenheit, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash typically develops three to five days after initial symptoms appear, starting on the face before extending to other areas of the body.

Individuals experiencing symptoms are advised to remain at home and refrain from attending school, work, or other activities. They should contact their healthcare provider immediately, but officials recommend notifying the provider ahead of time to avoid visiting the facility in person.

A measles outbreak has been growing in Texas and New Mexico in recent weeks, reaching 253 confirmed cases as of March 11. Two cases reported in Oklahoma on Tuesday are potentially linked to the ongoing outbreak.
