Louis Rees-Zammit: Former Rugby Player Turned NFL Player Departs from Kansas City Chiefs | Breaking UK News
Former rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit has departed from the reigning Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs after not making the team’s 53-man roster.
The 23-year-old has now joined the Jacksonville Jaguars and will be a part of their practice squad.
The former rugby winger, who played for the British and Irish Lions, scored 70 points for Wales in 32 appearances for his country.
During his club career, Rees-Zammit made 77 appearances for Gloucester and scored a total of 210 points.
However, Rees-Zammit, who hails from Penarth, shocked the rugby world when he announced his departure from rugby union in January this year, just before the start of the Six Nations championship.
His country ended up finishing last in the tournament.
The Welshman joined the NFL‘s international player pathway with the aim of providing elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at NFL level and enhance their skills.
The ultimate goal is to secure a spot on a team’s roster, but Rees-Zammit was unable to secure a place with the Chiefs, the team he initially signed a three-year deal with.
Rees-Zammit was primarily playing as a running back, but will now play as a wide receiver for the Jaguars and will wear jersey number 84.
His move opens up the possibility of him playing in London later this year, as part of the NFL’s initiative to host more games outside of the US.
