Luigi Mangione Accused of Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson | US News
Luigi Nicholas Mangione has been arrested for the murder of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson.
Authorities apprehended Mangione on Monday after a McDonald’s worker in Pennsylvania notified law enforcement about a customer carrying a gun, wearing a mask, and possessing notes that connected him to the attack.
The 26-year-old faces charges in Altoona related to weapons, forgery, and other offenses, and is set to be extradited to New York.
The unexpected sighting at the fast-food restaurant marked a significant breakthrough in the rapidly evolving investigation.
Officer Tyler Frye, who is relatively new to the force, and another officer responded to the McDonald’s where the suspect was identified.
They requested Mangione to lower his blue medical mask and “recognized him instantly”.
Officer Frye remarked: “We didn’t hesitate; we were certain he was the suspect we were looking for.”
“It feels rewarding to take a suspect like that off the streets, especially as I begin my career, it feels amazing.”
According to legal documents, when asked if he had visited New York recently, Mangione “grew silent and started trembling”.
Mr. Thompson, aged 50, was fatally shot last Wednesday while walking alone to a hotel hosting the annual investor conference of UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare.
