Malik Dunbar: Caledonia Gladiators Basketball Club ‘Unaware’ Player Was ‘Suspect in US Gun Murder’ | UK News
A basketball player who was released earlier this week by a Scottish club is reportedly under investigation as a suspect in a murder case involving a firearm in the US.
Malik Dunbar, 28, was dismissed by the Caledonia Gladiators for an unrelated issue, with the club stating it became aware of the shooting allegations later.
Dunbar joined the East Kilbride-based team at the start of December, approximately two months after it was reported that he was named a suspect in a deadly shooting in Augusta, Georgia.
Arthur Braxton, 32, was shot in a car park outside the Mexican restaurant El Presidente on the evening of October 4.
At that time, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office reported that he had been shot at least once and was declared dead at the scene.
The authorities indicated that an individual was taken into custody for questioning as the investigation began.
A representative for the sheriff’s office confirmed to Sky News that the homicide suspect is named Malik Dunbar.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Caledonia Gladiators announced the termination of contracts for both Dunbar and fellow player Jared Wilson-Frame due to a “serious breach of club discipline”.
Sky News understands the incident in question is non-violent and does not involve Police Scotland.
The club stated: “Following this breach, we have recently become aware of severe allegations related to Malik Dunbar in the US, prior to his signing with the club, but we cannot provide commentary on any potential police investigation.”
“We collaborate with reputable sports agencies that provide players to clubs worldwide, and no allegations were disclosed during our due diligence process.”
“As such, we have initiated an internal review with the relevant stakeholders.”
